Why Most People Still Use AI Like a Search Engine
· 2 min read
Most people type a few words into ChatGPT or Claude, get a bland answer, and decide AI is overhyped. The tool usually isn't the problem. They're using it the way they use Google: short keywords in, quick answer out.
It's the first thing we fix in the AI workshops we run for teams in Columbus.
A search box vs. a new assistant
A search engine finds things that already exist. An AI assistant creates something new for you, and it can only work with what you give it. Think of it as a smart, fast assistant on their first day. Capable, eager, and knowing nothing about your business until you tell them.
See the difference
- Search-engine style: “email to angry customer”
- Assistant style: “I run a family bakery. A customer's order was late because of a storm. Write a warm reply, under 100 words, and offer 10% off their next order.”
Same tool. The second one gets an answer you can actually send.
The first answer is a draft
The other habit to break: taking the first response and moving on. With AI, the real value comes from the back-and-forth. “Shorter.” “More like me.” “Give me three options.”
The short version
You didn't miss it. Most people are still using AI like a search engine. Give it context, keep the conversation going, and you're already ahead.

Is it too late to start learning AI?
No. Most people are still using it at a basic level. A week of practice with better habits puts you ahead of the majority.
Which AI tool should a beginner start with?
Any major assistant works, such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. The habits matter more than the tool.
Is it safe to use AI at work?
Yes, with common sense. Check facts before you use them, and don't paste private customer or financial information unless your company uses an approved business version.
